Terrence Jones, becoming legendary

The gymnasium at Jefferson High School was repainted in Democrat blue a year or two ago, and it challenges the North Portland school’s athletes to “become legendary.”

That’s a tall order for a school whose boys and girls basketball teams have won three state championships in the past two years.

But if anyone stands a chance of that, it is Terrence Jones. The 6-9 senior scored 50 points against Cleveland Feb. 16, even though the Warriors double-teamed him all night, and he spent most of the third and fourth quarters on the bench. The Demos won 92-66.

Among the class of 2010, Jones is ranked nationally as the third-best small forward, and 13th best overall. He was recently named to the McDonald’s All-America Game.

Jones hasn’t committed to any college program yet, though. He is reportedly considering a handful of top-name schools, including Oklahoma, UCLA, Oregon, Washington and Kentucky.

Jefferson, the top-ranked 5A team in the state, has a bye in the first round of the playoffs. They will play a first-round winner Saturday night at Jefferson, for a berth in the state tournament.

(Oh, and Cleveland is in the playoffs too. They host Sherwood tonight.)
