The world welcomed nearly 100 new curlers last week as dozens of men and women took to the hacks at the Lloyd Center. The Evergreen Curling Club (ECC) hosted “learn to curl” events to give Portlanders a taste of the fast-growing Olympic sport.
The lessons included both off-ice and on-ice instruction as well as a short game.
Participants, who ranged in age from about 10 to 60+, learned to throw, sweep, call a shot, and score an end.
The club expects a surge in interest this season as the sport is broadcast on television during Vancouver Olympics. ECC will present four more learn-to-curl events in late February and early March, and will hold a special four-week novice league starting in mid-March. Check the ECC website for details.
